From Saiyans to State Law: Former Dragon Ball Z Composer Wins Texas AG Race

Nathan Johnson, a former composer for the popular anime series Dragon Ball Z, has been elected Texas attorney general, bringing an unexpected musical background to one of the state’s highest legal offices.

The Democratic state senator defeated Republican Mayes Middleton in the November 3, 2026, election, becoming the first Democrat elected to the position since 1994.

Long before his political career, Johnson created music for 67 episodes of the English-language version of Dragon Ball Z and five movies connected to the franchise.

In a social media video, Johnson recalled how his young son enjoyed watching the animated series while he worked on its music. He described the experience as a creative outlet that also helped him connect with younger audiences.

A trained pianist and experienced attorney, Johnson has represented a Dallas-area district in the Texas Senate since 2019.

His election marks a significant political change in Texas, where Republicans have held the attorney general’s office for more than three decades.

Johnson is expected to take office in January 2027.
