By Mariana A Jul 9, 2026 | 5:10 AM

The planned Britney Spears biopic is taking another step forward, with Liz Meriwether set to write the screenplay for the film based on Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me.

The project is in development at Universal Pictures, which acquired the rights to the book in 2024. Jon M. Chu is attached to direct, while Marc Platt is producing. No casting details or release date have been announced.

Meriwether is best known as the creator of New Girl, the comedy series starring Zooey Deschanel that ran for seven seasons. Her involvement adds a notable television and character-driven storytelling background to the project.

Spears released The Woman in Me in 2023. The memoir became a major bestseller and drew wide attention for its account of her career, personal life, public scrutiny, and conservatorship.

The film is expected to focus on Spears’ life and rise as one of the most recognizable pop artists of her generation. For now, the biopic remains in early development as the screenplay takes shape.
