The Pentagon is in the final stages of an investigation into the February strike on a girls’ elementary school in Minab, Iran, one of the deadliest civilian incidents linked to the 2026 Iran conflict. NBC News reported that the review is expected to address how the strike occurred and whether targeting failures contributed to the loss of life.
The attack hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh school on Feb. 28, the first day of the war, killing more than 170 children and teachers, according to Iranian officials. U.S. military officials have acknowledged that the investigation has been unusually complex because the school was located near an active Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps missile facility.
Preliminary findings previously reported by several outlets suggested that outdated intelligence may have played a role in the targeting process. The Pentagon later elevated the investigation and assigned senior officials to conduct a more extensive review of the incident.
As scrutiny of the strike has grown, lawmakers have continued to push for transparency and the public release of the investigation’s findings. The final report is expected to provide a clearer account of what happened and whether any corrective actions will follow.
